Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want

Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want. The first in-person Conference about Oceans will be in Barcelona this April.

Three years after the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate achievements and set joint priorities for the future of the Decade. It will take place on 10-12 April 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

Under the theme, ‘Delivering the science we need for the ocean we want,’ the Conference embodies the essence of transformative ocean science, driving towards actionable solutions. It underscores the Ocean Decade’s pivotal role as a catalyst for inclusive and equitable collaboration across diverse stakeholder groups.

The Conference will serve as a global platform, facilitating engagement among governmental bodies, industry leaders, academia, philanthropic organizations, NGOs, and other stakeholders. It aims to foster dialogue, forge new partnerships, and showcase innovative scientific solutions that address pressing ocean challenges.

Key objectives of the Conference include showcasing achievements, setting priorities for the Ocean Decade’s future trajectory, fostering networking and partnership opportunities, mobilizing global commitments, preparing for future engagement, spotlighting local initiatives, and enhancing public awareness of the Ocean Decade’s mission.

Ocean Cities Network will co-lead a satellite event titled «Cities with the Ocean – Ocean science for the sustainable development of coastal cities and ports,» emphasizing the integral relationship between coastal cities and the ocean. This event will showcase how coastal cities and ports can utilize ocean science to safeguard the ocean, adapt to global changes, and enhance the well-being of local communities and stakeholders. It will inaugurate the «Cities with the Ocean» platform as part of the Ocean Decade, fostering international collaboration. By facilitating dialogue among coastal cities, ports, and ocean science, the event aims to foster robust and sustainable connections between coastal communities and the ocean, stimulate innovation and synergy, exchange experiences, envision the future, and empower cities and stakeholders.
