Conversations about Cities and the Sea

As part of the debate series “Cities and Sea,” a discussion titled “The Sea: A Global Common Good” will be held at the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona.

Barcelona, September 5

According to UNESCO, more than 40% of the world’s population lives within 100 km of the coast, and approximately 11% of the global population resides in urban coastal areas, which are exposed to climate risks. These regions face challenges such as rising sea levels, extreme heat events, unsustainable territories, and prolonged droughts. These factors are compounded by human activities such as mass tourism and the loss of coastal biodiversity, making coastal urban areas highly vulnerable.

For this reason, marine conservationist Tundi Agardy, founder of Sound Seas, and Júlia López Ventura, European director of C40 Cities, will participate in a talk to reflect on the importance of preserving coastal regions on a global scale. The conversation will be moderated by Valenti Sallarés, director of the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC), who coordinates UNESCO’s Ocean Cities Network program.
